C. T. Smith
A memorial service was held on Saturday, August 8, 1992 at the Wylie United Methodist Church for C. Truett Smith, 74, of Wylie who passed away on Wednesday, August 5 in Wylie. He was born on December 20, 1917 in Wylie, the son of Stephen and Maud Anderson Smith. He was married to Rita Gallagher Smith, who was also a descendant of early settlers of the St. Paul and Wylie Area.
He entered the newspaper business in 1935 after graduating from Wylie High School. In 1942, he joined the First National Bank in Garland. He was president of the Texas Banker's Association and Chairman of the Board of Governors of Collin Memorial Hospital in McKinney. He was a past president of the East Texas Chamber of Commerce and was one of the original organizers of the North Texas Municipal Water District. Mr. Smith was the original organizer of the First State Bank in Wylie in 1945, where he remained until 1981 when he sold his banking interests. He owned the Wylie News for over 40 years and was Editor and Publisher at his death. He married Rita Gallagher on July 2, 1949 and together they owned Wylie Insurance Agency for many years.
In 1985, Mr. Smith and his wife donated a building for a library for the City of Wylie.
He is survived by his wife, Rita; sister, Leta Harper; sister-in-law Sister Helen Marie Gallagher; brother-in-law, Joe Gallagher; 3 nieces, Ginny Harper, Margaret Cook, Angela LeFevre; 1 nephew, Michael Gallagher; 3 great nieces and 4 great nephews.
