Tom W. Perkins, 74, a veteran of 57 years in the printing and publishing business and owner of the Daily Courier-Gazette, The Weekly -Democrat-Gazette and the Farmersville Times, passed away at the McKinney City Hospital at 5:19 a.m. Tuesday.
In declining health for the past several months, Mr. Perkins became seriously ill Sunday. He had resided in Collin County since he was 17 years of age, when he started a newspaper in Wylie, The Wylie Rustler. For seven years he published the Rustler and made it one of the outstanding weeklies of the state. He at one time published a paper in Plano. He came to McKinney, where he purchased the Weekly Democrat from Clint Thompson and shortly after taking over the weekly he started the Daily Gazette. In later years, together with Walter B. Wilson, he merged the Daily Gazette with the Daily Courier and Weekly Democrat and this partnership continued until Mr. Wilson's death in October 1939.
Mr. Perkins’ energy, will power, and ambition is exemplified in the fact that he was admitted to the bar at the age of 20. He has held many honors during his lifetime, including his elevation to the presidency of the Texas Press Association; election to the House of Representatives and to the State Senate and his advancement to the 32nd degree of Masonry and a Shriner. At different times he has served this city as mayor, for a total period of 16 years. Mr. Perkins was the first president of the McKinney Commercial club, helping to organize the body which was the forerunner of the present Chamber of Commerce.
He was a well-known figure throughout the state of Texas, being an able and effective speaker. He was loved by all of his friends who are numbered by his acquaintances. Mr. Perkins was a progressive citizen, taking a lead in all movements having the improvement and betterment of the city and community as their objective.
Born in Lamar county, Mr. Perkins was the son of Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Perkins. He married Sallie Faulkner and to them were born four children. He was a member of the First Christian Church.
The last member of his immediate family, Mr. Perkins is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sallie Perkins; one daughter, Mrs. Marie Perkins Smith; two sons, Tom W. Perkins, Jr., and L. L. (Pete) Perkins; five grand sons, Jon Pete, Jr. Alfred, Max and Jimmie Perkins; three grand daughters Patty James, Clara Marie and Sally Adele Perkins; and one great grand son, Alfred Perkins II. One son Maxwell F. Perkins, preceded him in death.
Funeral services are to be conducted at the First Christian Church at 5 o’clock Wednesday afternoon.
Rev. Gerald P. McCollom, pastor of the First Methodist Church of McKinney, and Rev. Robert L. Cowan, formerly pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in McKinney, but now of Wichita Falls, will conduct the services at the church and the Masonic lodge will hold services at the grave.
The active pallbearers are: Charles Graves, Jesse M. Foster, Walter Holland, M. C. Johnson, Thos. Johnson, Alfred Scott.
The Crouch-Moore Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
