Thompson School was included on a list of Collin County schools in 1880. It was said to have excellent farming lands with timber and prairie. W. C. Reeves was the teacher.
On September 8, 1885, Alfred Thompson and wife, P. T. Thompson deeded three acres of land for a community burial ground and one and a half acres for the Thompson School House. The land had previously belonged to A. F. Sherley.
The first school in the area was called the Thompson School. It had a long one-room wooden building with a small side room for the smaller students. It was located across the road on the east side of the cemetery and in back of the E. S. Kemp Country Store. Inside the school building were double desks, some long benches, blackboards, a teacher’s desk, books, some long tables with buckets of water and dippers. A few of the teachers were Leburn Goforth, W. W. Jones, Mr. Cross, Myrtle Hess, Mr. and Mrs. McLarry and Harry Hatler. In 1890 there were 128 students.
In 1895 the Thompson School District #73 was divided into Snow Hill School #73, Fayburg School #142, and Water Ridge School #141.
