There were 2 Thompson Schools. One was the original school in the Snow Hill community. The other was a school southeast of Princeton in the Backbone School District. This second school is the one this history will be about.
The Thompson School and the Backbone School were both in District #81. Thompson School was 2 ¼ miles northeast of the Backbone School.
Teachers were: Miss Estell Lansdale in 1901; J. M. Ledbetter in 1905; Prof. E. C. Maxwell in 1914 & 15; Prof S. G. Taylor in 1916; S. G. Taylor and Miss Cora Lee Thomas in 1918. In 1909 Backbone #2 had 52 students The Thompson School had 63 students in 1925 and 54 in 1940.
In 1918 the County Superintendent of schools said this about Thompson School:
“Thompson school district is just completing a new two room house which is meeting the State requirements in every particular. This school is a credit to any community. I feel sure that under the new surroundings that this school will rapidly go forward. The school had a two-acre campus that was well located.
Its enrollment is 78. S. G. Taylor and Miss Cora Lee Thomas are the teachers. Mr. Taylor is in Class No. 1, but hopes to get to finish his school before going to the training camp.”
