County Line Road and Old Skaggs School Road
Celina, Texas
Skaggs School about 1928
The Old Skaggs School District was located in the extreme northwestern corner of Collin County. The school building was actually located in Grayson County, but the school district straddled the Collin/ Grayson County Line.
The school building was at the intersection of Old Skaggs School Road and County Line Road. County Line Road is also known as Marilee Road and as CR 60. CR 60 runs westward from where Preston Road, SH 289, enters Grayson County to where it makes a jog as it crosses the west Collin County line. The north side of the road is Grayson County and the south side is Collin County.
At one time a small community named Marilee was located at Preston Road and County Line Road. The Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad tracks run along the west side of Preston Road in the area. The Celina High School Complex, which was once the Alla School District, is visible about 2 miles to the south.
There was another school district, Sunbeam, east of Skaggs that straddled the county line. Both the Skaggs and Sunbeam school districts were closed in 1942. The county line became the new dividing line for the students in the area. Those in Grayson County were moved to the Gunter School District; those in Collin County were moved to the Alla School District.
The ownerships of the old school buildings were also divided between the districts. The Gunter School District got the old Skaggs School building and the Alla District got the old Sunbeam School building.
A notice in the Celina Record newspaper for June 29, 1944 stated:
“Buildings for Sale: By order of the Grayson County school board, the Gunter school board is offering for sale by sealed bids: One 2-room school building known as the Skaggs school.” [other items for sale]
