The Settle Family
William Thomas Settle came to Collin County, together with several brothers, from Kentucky and settled around Prosper and Rhea Mills. Leslie Simon Settle, son of William and Georgia Ann Drain Settle, was born January 17, 1894 and died December 27, 1965. He was the 10th of 11 children born to his parents. After school days, Leslie Settle was a salesman, covering Collin County and surrounding counties. He was a veteran of World War I. He married Clefa Belle Johnson, the daughter of Oscar Childs Johnson and Sarah Leona Conwell Johnson. Oscar Childs John and Boone Johnson (who established the Johnson Furniture company in McKinney) were two of the thirteen children of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Johnson of Princeton.
William Thomas and Clefa Belle Settle were the parents of the following children; Billy Childs (1925-1925), Joyce Marie Settle Kee (1929), Leslie Clifton Settle, Nennie Lee, Clyde Monroe, Georgia Ann Settle Smith, Ida Belle Settle Bennett, Barbara Settle Bennett, and Gloria Suzanne Settle Metheny.
Joyce Marie Settle Kee has been the postmaster at Melissa for almost twenty years. She was married April 7, 1951 to John Monroe Kee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Kee. They are the parents of four children Jaqueta Marie, the eldest is married to Ronnie Dale Hardin, a teacher at Lake Highlands High School in Richardson, and music director at Dunn Memorial Baptist Church, near New Hope. Other children of the Kee family are Joseph Simon, a ninth grader at Melissa Schools, Julie Melissa is a third grader, and Jonna Merrieve is a kindergarten student at Melissa. Joyce Kee has been the correspondent for the Examiner, Daily Courier-Gazette, and Sherman Democrat for ten years. The Kee family has been active all areas of civic endeavor as well as in their work of their church.
