Dr. Samuel Leggett Robinson
A beloved doctor well known to pioneer residents at Nevada was Dr. Samuel Leggett Robinson. He was born February 9, 1823, at Charleston, So. Carolina. Harriett Benjamin Jordan became his wife on July 22, 1853. She was born in Bertie County, No. Carolina on Dec. 2, 1840. He studied at Charleston, So Carolina for his M D. degree. After their marriage, they first came to Athens, Texas, in 1858 and two years later he moved to Nevada,, Texas, and set up practice. Mr. and Mrs. Robinson were members of the Church of Christ. Their twelve children were as follows: 1. Anna Robinson was born Aug. 2, 1856. She married Newton J. Stinebaugh on Aug. 13, 1877. he was born 1856 in Missouri. He was a son of Granville, Stinebaugh whose family settled early at Nevada. They were of the Baptist faith. Their children were Charles, who married Ora Jones and Lela who died in infancy. Anna died in 1937. 2. Maston W. was born Jan. 2, 1858 and died July 24, 1866. 3. Samuel I. was born Mar. 30, 1859, and died Jan. 22, 1878. 4. John T. was born Dec. 6, 1860. He married Mary Sue Buchanan on May 26, 1884. Their children were David Guy, Mary Crow, Willie J., Lottie Mae, Alvie, and Ida Inez. 5. James J. was born Apr. 22, 1862. He married Dora Lee Stinebaugh on Mar. 31, 1885. She was a daughter of Sam Stinebaugh. They were blessed with twelve children. 6. Henrietta E. was born Nov. 19, 1863. She married W. H. Buchanan on Jan. 19, 1883. They were members of the Church of Christ. He taught at the Old Karo School. Their children were: Novae, Russell, Vista, and Clarence. Henrietta died Jan. 9, 1941. 7. Martha E. was born July 15, 1865 and died Mar. 14, 1866. 8. Miriam E. was born Jan. 20, 1867 and died June 23, 1887. 9. Pompey was born Nov. 13, 1869 and died in 1931. He married May Taylor and second to Lovace Rodgers. His children were Faye Nell, Gladys and Oma May by his first wife. By his second wife, Obed. 10. Horace Oscar was born Dec. 10, 1871 and died Feb. 1, 1888. 11. Jerome was born Apr. 14, 1874 and died Jan. 25, 1890. 12.Ila was born Aug. 11, 1876. She married W. A. Hambrick on Jan. 11, 1890. She died July 10, 1890. Dr. Robinson died Mar. 2 1887 and was laid to rest in the Bear Creek Cemetery. No citizen contributed more to the progress, health and happiness of the pioneer communities around Nevada than Dr. Robinson. His wife passed away Jan. 28, 1925. |
John Wesley Robinson Sr.
John Wesley Robinson was born to an old Tennessee family January 21, 1876 at Bushgrove, Tennessee. As a young man he came to Plano to join family friends who had settled in Plano, the Carlisle's in 1896. His knowledge of farming and ranching soon made a place for him in his new home. July of 1926 married Mary Isebell Pirtle of Tennessee, who had come with her family and settled south of Dallas. Her father was A. G. Pirtle of Denton. To them were born four sons, James Gipson Robinson, John Wesley Robinson, Eugene Quentin Robinson and Leland Howell Robinson. The family moved from the Bethany community to Hebron in 1920 on the farm he had purchased, Mrs. Robinson died April of 1925. Being left with four small sons to rear was not easy, and in July of 1926 John married his son James's school teacher, Mary Elizabeth Price, the daughter of A. G. Price of Denton. The new family settled west of Plano in the Haggard Community. Four children were born to this union, Mary Ellen, Lewis Jacob, L. Vernon, and Tom Ellis Robinson. He spent his life farming and ranching, and the family was always a part of the community activities of school and church. Mr. Robinson died in a traffic accident September 10, 1963 at age 87. J. W. Robinson Passes Away Here Saturday
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Cottage Hill Methodist Church for James W. Robinson, aged 42, who died Saturday in the Veterans hospital. He resided at 501 North Bradley Street, and had just returned to McKinney six months ago after seventeen years service in the Army.
Rev. Earl Rogers, pastor of the Full Gospel Assembly of God Church, officiated with burial in the Cottage Hill Cemetery directed by Harris- Horn Funeral Home.
A native of Weston, Collin County, he was born January 23, 1922, the son of Winkett and Lula Coalson Robinson. He was a Baptist, and operated a Sinclair service station here at the corner of Virginia and Chestnut Streets. He had served in World War II and the Korean War and was a First sergeant at the time of his retirement.
Survivors are his wife; son, James Robinson and daughter, Karen Robinson, all of McKinney; his mother Mrs. Lula Robinson of Celina; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Loftice of McKinney, Mrs. Winona Harless of Farmersville; five brothers, Odel of San Antonio, ___and Clint , Robert, ___and Kenneth of McKinney.

50th Wedding anniversary
Lyman D. and Juanita Lankford Robinson will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on June 2 at their home, 308 N. West Park Drive in McKinney. Relatives and friends may call on them on this special occasion. A reception will be held for them at the future date. They were married inn the First Baptist Church in Sherman, by Dr. J. A. Ellis on June 2, 1932. Their son, Lyman D. (Don), who is in the Navy, resides with his wife Pat and daughters Elisabeth and Maria, in Washington, D. C. Their daughter Michell and her husband John Perkins, live in Indiana. Another daughter, Linda, resides in Whitewright with her husband, Stephen A. Sullivan and their children, Matt and Kelly. |
To Be Wed
Lisa Leeann Rollins of Celina and Tim Robinson of Denton have chosen August 9 for their wedding day. They will be married in the Bethel Baptist Church at 7:30 p.m. A reception will follow in the fellowship[p hall of the church. Bill Rollins of Lamesa and Joy Dickson of Celina are parents of the bride--to-be, Mr. and Mrs. Grady Rollins of Anna and Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Yates of Celina are her grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Wilburn Robinson of Denton are parents of the groom-to-be. Mr. and Mrs. Tim Robinson and Mr. and Mrs. Huburt King of Whitesboro are his grandparents. |
