The Rike (Reich) Family
R. A. Rike (Reich) came to Collin County in 1850 from North Carolina, settling on Pilot Creek, three miles west of Farmersville. He was born in Salem, North Carolina, October 22, 1821 and christened in the Moravian Church. He married Maria Seitz (Sides), born 29 Nov. 1818 in Salem, N. C., and there were three children who lived to grow up: Henry, John, and Lewis. The family left Salem in April of 1850; the caravan of settlers included his two brothers, Owen and Augustus. Owen settled at Bonham and Augustus, single, went back to North Carolina. Also in the party were Lewis Sides, brother of Maria, who settled NW of R. A. Rike near Climax. R. A. Rike had these children all being born in Collin County, Julia 1851, Robert 1853, Owen, 1855, George, 1857 and Mary 1859. After the death of Maria, R. A. was married to Martha Griffin and to this union were born Emma, Mattie , and Sallie and a son, Charles, who died young.
R. A. Rike was a member of the Regular Texas Cavalry of the Confederate Army, as shown by the muster rolls of the 5th Martin Cavalry of 1862 with J. K. Bumpass the Captain. Henry Rike, his son, was also in the Confederate Army at the time.
John Rike, son of R. A., was Justice of the Peace and was the first mayor of Farmersville, 1973. R. A. Rike had the first hotel in Farmersville in the 1860s on Main Street. George Rike was a partner with E. H. Pendleton and W. B. Yeary in Farmersville's first Drug Store in 1885. Charles J., son of George Rike, was associated with this drug store for 45 years. The business sold in 1965 to Billy Harrison after 81 years of Rike ownershilp. Rike Street in both McKinney and Farmersville are named for R. A. Rike. Story by Charles J. Rike
