U. S. Rep. Ray Roberts
Congressman H. Ray Roberts, Democrat of McKinney, was born March 28, 1913 in Collin County. He was a son of Roy Clifton Roberts and Margaret Burton. He was educated in the local public schools and graduated from McKinney High School. He later attended A. & M, North Texas State, and the University of Texas. He earned a degree in Agribusiness. He had a brother, Roy Geldon Roberts and a sister, Evelyn Robertson.
Roberts was a combat veteran of World War II and also served in the Korean War, retiring from the Naval Reserve as a Captain. He married the former Elizabeth Bush of McKinney, and they had a daughter, Mrs. Tom R. Murray II, and two grandchildren.
Ray Roberts began his public service in 1935, as director of the National Youth Administration of Texas under Lyndon Johnson, and in 1940, he joined the staff of House Speaker, Sam Rayburn. He was on the Public Works Committee and the Veteran's Affairs Committee. He was chairman of the Public Works subcommittee on Water Resources. His was also a member of the subcommittees on Transportation, Public Buildings, and Grounds, and Energy.
Lake Ray Roberts and Lake Ray Roberts State Park were named for him.
