After the Civil War they lost their plantation and came to Texas by way of Jefferson. They came on a ship bringing only their clothes and one bale of cotton, raised on the plantation. Inside the bale of cotton was a brass and cut glass candle stick and a pair of brass andirons. They bought an ox team and set out for Van Alstyne, the journey taking six weeks. While living in Van Alstyne Mr. Powerll died and the family moved to McKinney. Mrs. Powell died in 1003, leaving two sons, Leslie and Yancy and a daughter, Mrs. J. M. Pearson and her grandchildren, J. Matt Pearson, and Mrs. Clarence Merritt. both John B. and his wife are buried in Pecan Grove Cemetery in McKinney.
