The Plano Academy, also known as the Portman School, was established in 1880 on 14th Street in Plano and near the Houston &Texas Central Railroad tracks. It was a private school, and the first teacher was Matthew C. Portman. Some of the first students included Isabel and Emma Boggess, Nick Hood, Will, Florence, and Lou Fouche, Mattie Huguley, Gee Hudson, Lillie Bradshaw, and Genoa Chaddick.
Another well-known teacher at the Academy was A. C. Bohanon who held a first-grade certificate, and his reputation was “second to none.” Students at the academy wore gray uniforms. Effie Huguley had a gray uniform made for her before she attended school. Joe Bradshaw was also a student at the Academy. Bradshaw rode his horse 3 ½ miles from Spring Creek to attend. In 1880, the school did receive $290.81 of available funds from the county.
The graduating class of 1900 included some of the children of Plano pioneers. It included Etta Isom, Beaulah Turner, Annie Carpenter, May Wilkerson, Annie McKamy, Carrie Hughston, Gutha Mathews, Mae Hudson, Mamie Fortner, Clara Schimelpfenig, and Julia Christian.
