Pond Branch is a creek that starts south of Nevada near CR 590 and flows in a southeasterly direction through Royse City where it eventually joins Bois d’Arc Creek. It is east of the Pleasant Hill/South Church Cemetery.
The Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and Cemetery were established south of Nevada in 1882 when the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church near Copeville split into 2 churches. North Church eventually became Copeville Baptist Church. South Church became known as Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Land was secured in the Collin County Deed Records on September 28, 1881, August 16,1882, March 16,1898 and May 14,1903. They deeded .09 acres to the Pon {sic} Branch School #76 located at the southeast corner of the cemetery. A school house was built on the church land. It was later sold to Joe Gooch, son of Roland Gooch.
An article in the newspaper in 1888 stated that, “Our school at Pleasant Hill school house is in good head way, presided over by Prof. Jones, he has a good school and is a teacher capable of doing justice to his scholars, and learn them.
A letter in the newspaper from Royse City on Feb. 4, 1889 states:
“Dear Uncle Snort:
I am but a little girl only 12 years old. I am going to school at Pleasant Hill. I like my teacher very much. His name is Mr. Money. My studies are Arithmetic, Geography, Spelling, Fourth Reader and Grammar. “
A History of Nevada, Texas states: “South Church. The school house was built on the church land. The school building was sold to Joe Gooch, the son of Roland Gooch. In 1896 Miss Vanna Belew was the teacher Some of the early teachers were: Rev. Henry T. Money, taught the first school. Other teachers were Burr Ingle, Mary Emma Simmons, Sallie Simmons, D. E. Dean and others, Burrell B. Evans, Sr., taught the last school 1900 to 1902. Both of the buildings have been torn down.”
Pond Branch #76 had 77 students in 1890; 67 students in 1891; and 69 students in 1892. By 1899 there were 46 students and 41 in 1900. B. B. Evans of Nevada was the teacher in 1901. There is no mention of District 76 after 1901.
There was another school named Pleasant Hill near Culleoka. It is difficult at times to know which school is being referred to in articles.
