Orchard Gap School
Orchard Gap School
Country Club Road and Estates Parkway
FM 1378 and FM 2170
Lucas, Texas
Orchard Gap Primitive Baptist Church was located about midway between Lucas and Forest Grove and about 7 miles southeast of McKinney on Country Club Road (FM 1378). The church was founded in 1853. Elder Jim Lowery and Jacob Faulkner taught the school there before the Civil War. Chris Black also taught at Orchard Gap.
One day Jacob Faulkner whipped a large bully of a boy, rather a young man, and this “big bully” threatened to whip the teacher. J. B. Faulkner, a son of the teacher, challenged the “bully” to a duel to be fought at McKinney on a certain day. The strong young Ben Faulkner appeared, but the “bully” has not yet showed up. Later this same J. B. Faulkner served in the Confederate Army, became a Christian Preacher, and was one of the best beloved men in the county.
Most histories of the Lucas area do not mention a school at the Orchard Gap Primitive Baptist Church. In fact, one source insists that Orchard Gap Baptist Church did not have a school. However, none of the Lucas area histories include the time before the Civil War. Jim Lowery and Jacob Faulkner were well known preachers of that section of Collin County.
