The North Ward School was built in 1912. Later the school was renamed for J. L. Greer, who was a Civil War soldier, a former teacher at Mantua, and one of the founders of the town of Anna.
In 1936, a new J. L. Greer Elementary School was built by the Works Progress Administration. Later this building was used as the Art Academy at J. L. Greer and as an annex for the McKinney School Administration. The new building cost $24,500. One source says this school closed in 2005.
