New Life School
Between Altoga and Verona and Valdasta
The community of New Life was located roughly half-way between Altoga on the west and Verona on the east and half-way between Altoga on the south and Valdasta on the north on the west side of Harrington Branch creek.
The New Life School was Collin County School District #117. It was not included on a list of Collin County school districts in 1880. There were 47 students in 1890; 32 in 1891; and 35 in 1892. Levi Dorn of Verona was the teacher the New Life school for a couple of terms in the late 1890s.
In 1900 New Life school is filled to overflowing with 103 pupils enrolled. (Several people) visited the New Life School on August 10, 1900 and listened to a debate by the teachers and some of the pupils. Subject of the debate: “Resolved, that the generals of the Texas Revolution deserve more honor than those of the U. S. revolution. Misses Snow, Fletcher Anderson and Della Stroup were of the affirmative side and Profs. Cameron and Callie Powers were on the negative. Both sides produced some good arguments. The judges decided in favor of the negative side.
W. D. Cameron was the teacher in 1901; Prof. Fletcher Anderson in 1903; Prof. Lovelace in 1904; and Mrs. Allie Smith in 1905.
In 1909 the school had 33 males and 29 females for a total of 62 students. There were 46 students in 1912. The teacher in July of 1912 was Prof. G. A. Priest. Lud Bailey was employed to teach the New Life school in November of 1912.
In November of 1914 the enrollment was 25 pupils. Miss Beada McFadden was the teacher for 1914 and 1915.
M. D. Mullendor and L. V. Headrick were both trustees of New Life School in 1915. A box supper was given at the school house in December with the proceeds being used for digging a well and buying a stove for the school.
In 1918 the County Superintendent of Schools said this about New Life School: “The New Life school is small as to numbers but they plenty for one teacher. The enrollment is 28. They have ordered an election to increase their local tax to 40 cents. With this tax they will be able to maintain their school for six months. With less than $500 this house can be made to meet State requirements for aid. I hope that they will do it.”
In April 1918 L. E. Massey of Verona said that the New Life School was to have a new and larger school house built by the time the next school opened. He felt sure that the bonds soon to be voted on would overwhelmingly carry. They also wanted to make a two-teacher school. There were 49 students in 1925.
Miss Mildred Stroup teacher in the New Life school married Glenn Richardson in 1935. She was a teacher in the New Life school for 3 years in the 1930s. In 1940 the school had 48 students. This school consolidated with the Blue Ridge district.
