Farmersville, Texas
In 1890 School District #6 was called Meritt. It had 62 students. It was called Pleasant Valley in 1901. By 1912 it was called New Liberty.
New Liberty Consolidated School
This school is located four miles north of Farmersville, and was consolidated last September by Pleasant Valley and Liberty schools, for a better building and to secure a more thorough faculty. Patrons, pupils and the general public of the two communities are greatly pleased with this new educational institution, and are proud of the fact that it is the first and only consolidated school district in the county. It is one of the, if not the best, rural school buildings in the county, also, Miss Maude Jones of McKinney is the efficient principal, while Miss Ruby Rike is her capable assistant. From the very beginning the school has progressed nicely, and the faculty is giving perfect satisfaction.
The trustees were: R. C. McLeod, G. F. McElyea, and D. S. Shaw. All three of these were among the most prominent, progressive and influential men of East Collin. The building, which cost $1,600, should have been an example for all other rural communities to strive for. It was a very neat, attractive and substantial building, and would be good for many years.
In 1918 the County Superintendent of Schools said this about New Liberty School:
“The New Liberty school has a practically new house but it needs some more improvements made and needs a better heating system. They have two rooms and the district is out of debt. They need the limit in tax with this increase they can greatly improve the school. They have a fine location and plenty of ‘play ground’ for ‘base ball’ and ‘basket ball’ and have full equipment for each game. They have enrolled 77. Mr. J. C. Long and Miss Minnie Douglass are the teachers. This school has a very fine country surrounding it and should be heard from in the future.”
In 1925 there were 61 students and 43 in 1940. On November 5, 1943 the New Liberty School house had a chicken stew night with homemade cakes, pies, popcorn balls and cold drinks for sale. The proceeds were used to help the wounded soldiers at Ashburn General Hospital at McKinney.
