Mustang School
Mustang School
just north of Bethany Lakes Park
Allen, Texas
In an article written by R.B. Whisenant, the Mustang School House was an all-wooden structure (just north of present Bethany Lakes Park). There was the Alonzo Richards house in a grove of trees (the grove of trees is still present) then further south 200 yards was the schoolhouse, closer to the creek. “The kids used to go to the spring in the creek to get water and to go to the bathroom in the woods. It was named for all the wild mustangs that grazed on the prairies.” It was built in 1851, a long house with log benches, no backs and no desks. Nothing remains of this site. It is in an Allen Park. However, in the grove of trees, many small artifacts of the early Alonzo Richards early homestead can be found.
