John McMinn donated several acres to be made into a school, church yard for building of a church and a cemetery in 1881. The school building stood south of the road about 500 feet east of the McMinn Church and Cemetery on the road between Copeville and Josephine. The school had a hall for meetings that ran east to west, with a porch across the front. There was another room on the east side for classes. The school, which had grades to seven, had three buildings. The school was in operation before August 15, 1882, as the church was organized in the school building at that date.
Some of the teachers were: Sally (McSpadden) Reagan, 1894; Rev. Benjamin Spencer; J. O. Moore; Rev. J. A. Hornbeak; Walter Foote; Vera McClary; Katie Mae Huell; Ethel Rucker; Estell Wherry; Mary Spell; Branch Ford, 1914; Etta Robinson; John Pitts; Charley Akin; Hugh McCain, 1898; Edgar Kirby, 1899-1900; Moses Bryant; Harvey Jackson, 1901; Burrell B. Evan, Sr., 1903-04; Nettie Spearman; Eula Rucker, 1908; Beulah Maxey; Mrs. Buck Spell; Miss Nellie McElreath; Grace Vaughan; and Ora Euwell.
In 1880 McMinn was included on a list of Collin County schools. “McMinn, situated in the southwest corner of the county; good land, good farms. Teacher J. O. Moore, a young man, holds first-grade certificate. Fund $120.90.” In 1890 McMinn had 54 students. C. F. Kirby was the teacher in 1901 and Miss Lula Nix in 1905. In 1912 the school had 77 students and 40 in 1925 and 22 in 1940. The school consolidated with other districts to form the Community School.
McMinn School Bell
The McMinn School, south of Farmersville, once summoned its students with this 1886 school bell. It was purchased for the school by William Pressley Bumpass. When the school closed, the bell was purchased by Mr. Bumpass’ grandson, John W. Gooch, and was placed in the Midway Baptist Church, northeast of town. When Midway and Prairie Grove Baptist Churches combined to form Trinity Baptist Church, the bell was acquired by James McCrary. The bell is currently part of the collection at the Bain Honaker House in Farmersville.
