The J. M. McKinney School was built on the Jim McKinney property eight and one-half miles southeast of McKinney on the McKinney/ Rockwall Public Road where the road turns east to pass the churches just north of White Rock Creek.
The school was built in 1872 and named after “Uncle” Jimmy McKinney. He was the father of Joe D., Jim, Giles, Johnny, and Wiley McKinney.
The school was a box house sixteen feet by forty feet. There was a fire place on the west wall and split- log and plank seat benches along the north and south wall. The only desk was a crude area for children to sit and learn to write. The school had a well for drinking-water for students. There were a number of teachers who taught during different years. Reverend King and Professors Gentry, Stewart, and Coker were among those teachers. Children from the Fitzhugh, Snider, Cook, Sneed, Spurgeon, McKinney, Biggs, McMillen, Coffey, and Williams families attended the McKinney School House. The school appeared in the Stambaugh List of Schools from 1905-1918. The date the school closed is unknown.
