McKinney Independent School District was started around 1899. That year the district had 537 white students and 196 colored students. In 1901 the superintendent was F. D. Shepherd with R. E. Chapman as the principal. The principal of the Ward school was Miss Ruth Sneed with Miss Frances Horton and Miss Mae Greer as teachers. The superintendent in 1905 was J. H. Hill. The district had 869 students in 1907; 905 in 1908; and 916 in 1909. There were 950 white students and 178 colored students in 1913.
In 1925 McKinney had 1,862 students and 2,061 students in 1939. The 1928 graduating class had 29 students.
School Districts that were included in McKinney ISD in 1949 were McKinney, Bowlby, Bois d’Arc, Enloe, Milligan, McDonald, New Hope, Petersburg, Wetsel, White’s Grove, Wilson, Winningkoff and Woodlawn.
