It opened in time for the first classes in 1874. The two-story building had two rooms downstairs and 2 rooms upstairs. The school was built at the total cost of $1,850 and was called the McKinney Academy School. Nathaniel Somerville was named principal and teacher. The school operated as a tuition school. McKinney was included on a list of Collin County schools in 1880. The teacher was Mrs. C. H. Hobbs.

They were all for Petersburg. McKinney itself was an ISD.
