Massie School
Massie School #127
4 ½ miles east of McKinney
1 mile south of the Farmersville Road
Lowry Crossing, Texas
Located about 4½ miles east of McKinney between the two branches on the old Albert Massie homestead, the school opened in 1860. It was made of logs, and students obtained water from a spring in the branch which never went dry. The community often hauled water from the spring in barrels, buckets, or jugs during dry weather. Students who misbehaved were made to wear “leather specks,” made like leather binders, while standing in the corner of the school room. Rev. Abe Enloe and L. H. Goforth were two of the teachers. Miss Mattie Beck was the teacher in 1905. Massie School was listed in Stambaugh’s 1905-1918 lists of Collin County schools. The Massie School had 10 students in 1890. It was not included in the school list for 1912.
There is conflicting information on the location of this school. Some say it was north or east of Farmersville. Others say it was north or south of the Farmersville Road. All directions say it was 4 ½ miles east of McKinney. That means it was nowhere near Farmersville.
The One Room School in Collin County, Texas says it is the same as the Ketch Any School. Directions for the Ketch Any School say it was 3 ½ miles east of McKinney. Massie is sometimes spelled Massey.
