The Lower Rowlett School was located near present-day Custer Road and SH 121 near the Rowlett Creek Cemetery in Plano. The Rowlett Creek Baptist Church was also located here on the banks of Rowlett Creek. There was an Upper Rowlett School near Frisco at Custer Road and Eldorado.
George White donated six acres of land to the Rowlett Creek Baptist Church in 1861. Trustees were G.S. Baccus, O. E. Bush, and Ed Chambers. The church was built shortly before or just after the Civil War. Two of the early pastors were Portman and Stanton. No school was taught in this church building.
Another building was built with lumber from east Texas in 1870 near the church building. It was about twenty feet by thirty feet with planks floors, straw and mud chimney, three glass windows, and straight back benches. Joseph W. Baines was the first teacher. He was the grandfather of Lyndon Baines Johnson, who was the first U.S. President from Texas. Joseph Baines practiced law in McKinney and became a politician in Austin. Other teachers were Professor M. C. Portman and Mr. Cotton, who taught only one term and was known for whipping a large number of students.
