Stone Road near Kreymer Lane
Wylie, Texas
Kreymer School, 1924
Kreymer School or "Possum Trot" was built on a branch of Stone Road, not quite to the present Kreymer Lane in Wylie. There were several schools called Possum Trot in Collin County, at least 4 or 5. The land had been given by Dr. G. C. Kreymer. The school was constructed in 1891 from lumber donated from the old Lee School. The building was built using volunteer labor and was considered a much better structure than most two room schools of that day. Not only did it have a floor, but a sub floor as well.
Many Wylie teachers came from this school. Uncle Bascom J. Allen was teaching at the old Kreymer School in 1901 and the School Trustees at that time were Messrs. W. T. Moore, C. F. Allen, and J. R. Graham. There were 39 students in all.
James W. McDonald and Miss Clara Burkett were the teachers in January 18, 1906. Some students went to first grade at the Cottonbelt school but were promoted to Kreymer for 8th grade.
Mr. Ed Woods was the main trustee at Kreymer School, and, from 1922 through 1927, he was instrumental in hiring Thomas Roper to teach school there. He had no car; therefore, walking was Thomas’s mode of travel to and from Kreymer School for five years. The roads were graveled to and from Kreymer, but most roads near and far were black gum when raining. Thomas Roper was principal and Florence Helton was teacher in 1924.
Other teachers at Kreymer School were Gussie Woods and Ruth Maynard. Miss Delie Moore taught in Kreymer school in 1935.
Mrs. Mabel Smith came to Wylie where she taught until 1928. Then she joined the faculty at the old Kreymer school located just southeast of Wylie for an eleven-year stint. When the Kreymer school was consolidated with Wyllie, she joined the elementary school faculty there.
According to old records a Baptist church was organized at Kreymer School house and given the name of Shiloh Baptist Church around 1895 or earlier. The first pastor was Tom Newsome from Lucas, Texas.
