Ketch Any School
Ketch Any School
3 ½ miles east of McKinney, Bridgefarmer Road
Lowery Crossing, Texas
Ketch Any School, named by Albert Massie, was located about 3½ miles east of McKinney. Mr. Massie had a very fine breed of chickens, as well as some common breeds. One day he told his sons - Sam, Dick, and Arthur - to catch a chicken for dinner. When they ask which kind, he yelled “Ketch Any” because we will eat all of them anyway. This is how the school, which was near his farm, came about its name.
The school house was constructed in 1860. It was made of logs and about 14 feet by 16 feet covered with clap boards. No nails were used in the logs, but they were held together by poles. The school had a dirt floor and no windows. It was a subscription school and opened when students arrived, often after they did their chores or worked in the fields, and they often stayed to almost sundown. The school obtained water from a nearby spring.
According to The One Room School in Collin County, Texas, the Ketch Any School and the Massie School were the same. The Massie School is listed as being 4 ½ miles southeast of McKinney and one mile south of the Farmersville Road.
