Hickman School
Hickman School # 99
FM 2756 and SH 78
Farmersville, Texas
Hickman school was not on a list of Collin County schools in 1880.
Hickman School House was first mentioned in the newspaper in 1884 when there was a meeting by Rev. Wm. Phillips of the Free Will Baptist.
Hickman School had 64 students in 1890.
Hickman was probably named for the Hickman family that lived in the area. The community had 2 stores, a blacksmith shop and three doctors in 1893.
There was a meeting of the patrons of the Hickman school in 1897 to discuss enlarging the school building. Prof. W. W. Shepherd was present. The school conducted that year by Prof. Fox Striplin and his sister, Miss Coma.
The enrollment had reached 87 by 1902. The school needed a special school tax, a library, and some school apparatus. George P. Brown made a short speech to the school children.
J. F. Bell was the teacher in 1901 and 1902; Odell Davis in 1905; Miss Lucy Smith in 1908; Thos. McDonald in 1909; and Miss Maggie Jessie in 1914. There were 51 students in 1912.
In 1908 the Boggy citizens bought a new stove for the school house besides making other interior improvements. Well attended singings were held twice a week at the school -- Every Wednesday and Sunday night.
In 1918 the County Superintendent of Schools said this about Hickman School:
“Miss Katherine Alexander is teaching the Hickman school. She has enrolled 55. The attendance is good. The trustees have improved the house some. But more still needs to be done. They need a 50-cent tax and new house. Some are talking this and I hope that it will not be all talk. Here they have a fine bunch of boys and girls and it is impossible to give them what they deserve unless some improvements are made. I hope these good people will keep pace with many of the other schools in the East part of the county and have a new house ready for school next year.”
Cleo Farley was the teacher in October of 1921. The school had 62 students in 1925. It was not included of a list of county schools in 1940.
