The Hedgcoxe community was located about 10 miles southwest of McKinney along present-day Hedgcoxe Road. The McKinney Advocate in 1880 said the community had fine farming lands and was thickly settled by an enterprising class of farmers. The teacher was W. S. Agnew, a new man in the county. Other teachers included: Mrs. Lydia Ricknell in 1901; Miss Alta Harris in 1905; and Prof. W. H. Anglea in 1913 and 1914. In 1890 Hedgcoxe school had 58 students. There were 41 students in 1912.
The County School Superintendent stated in 1918:
“The Hedgcoxe School has an enrollment of 26. Miss Jessie Rollins is teaching and they will have six months of school. The house needs repairing and rearranged. With proper equipment this school will be able to do much better work.”
Hedgcoxe School was not included on a list of county schools in 1925. The name “Hedgcoxe” came from Oliver Hedgcoxe, who was the agent of the Peter’s Colony Land Company that helped establish settlement of Collin County. The name is sometimes misspelled with 2 ‘e’s – Hedgecoxe.
Oliver Hedgcoxe was an agent for the Peters Colony that helped settle the land in Collin County.
