The Harris community was named for the Harris family that lived in the area. It was also called Cowskin. It was located southeast of Farmersville.
The earliest mention of the Harris School in the newspapers was when the Texas Alliance announced a meeting to be held at the Harris school house on November 21, 1887.
In 1890 the Harris School had 60 students. H. M. Peak was teacher in 1901. The school had 22 males and 31 females in 1909 and 53 students in 1912. Dr. T. A. Hall was teacher at Harris School at the time of his death in 1912.
In 1918 the County Superintendent of Schools said this about the Harris School:
“The Harris school district voted bonds and erected them a new house several years ago. The house is a little defective in the lighting and does not properly heat. They are needing more play ground. We have some joy at school will sell or donate them some more land. They have enrolled 75. They have two teachers. Mr. H. F. Flanagan and Miss Edna Price. They are having a good average attendance.”
Collin County School Trustees’ Association listed M. T. Belew, Will Thomas and Jess May as trustees of Harris School in 1921.
For the annual Rat Contest in 1921, Mae Thomas of Harris School brought in 203 rat tails.
The school had 61 students in 1925 and 49 in 1940. The school consolidated with the Farmersville School District.
