Farmersville School
The Farmersville School District #18.
College Street
Farmersville, Texas
The first school of any importance [in Farmersville] was conducted in the "White Hall," or Masonic Hall, and Rev. W. A. Edwards was the teacher. Later a school was conducted on the present site of the Farmersville School, which was deeded to the city for a public school by the late Dr. A. H. Neathery and wife. This school was conducted by Messrs. Looney and Dowlan, assisted by Miss Sallie Hardin. This was later replaced by a brick building which soon became inadequate in size to accommodate the children of scholastic age, and the present building was erected.
The first public-school building in Farmersville was a two-story red brick school built in 1891 on College Street. It was used until 1912 when it was replaced by another building on the same lot. The school served grade school through high school. It was eventually named the East Ward School and served grade school students until a high school was built on North Main Street in 1924.
The first school building was a two-room building on Central Avenue in the northeastern part of town, which later became the Looney-Dowlin Male and Female Academy. That academy opened in 1885 and operated until the first public school system built the new red brick school on College Street in the 1890’s.
The teachers in 1903 were G. L. Marshall, superintendent; H. M. Peak, principal; Miss Francis Reynolds, 7th grade; Miss Lela Harris, 6th grade; Miss Delia Lovell, 5th grade; Miss Minerva Glass, 4th grade; Miss Minnie Shelton, 3rd grade; Miss Minnie Blankenship, the primary department. One other teacher will be elected-Farmersville Times.
These buildings have been torn down and the lot is used as a ball field.
