Enloe School
Enloe School #110
3 miles southeast of McKinney
McKinney, Texas
In 1858 Abe Enloe gave a portion of his land for the purpose of erecting a school house so the children of the community could go to school. The school was built of logs and was 12 by 18 feet in size. It was known as the Enloe School. It was located 3 miles east of McKinney and 1 mile south of the Farmersville Road.
Rev. Abe Enloe was the first teacher. He used the Blue Back Speller, Ray’s Arithmetic, and McGuffey’s Readers. His students drank from a gourd or from a buffalo’s or cow’s horn, cleaned and polished.
Prof. J. M. Collinsworth was the teacher in 1903-1904.
Enloe Jottings:
Another very interesting visit was made by us — this one to the Enloe School. It was a recess period, while the children were merrily playing about on the campus. Mrs. Carl Padgett is the teacher. She has twenty-eight pupils enrolled. The Enloe School under her direction has the reputation of being one of the best district schools being taught in the county this year or that has ever been taught at the Enloe Schoolhouse. The people of the community greatly appreciate their school and the services of their capable teacher. The School Board members are Milton Drake, Chairman; V. W. Wilson and B. S. Bassham.
