Dr. B. M. E. Smith
Dr. Smith settled in McKinney in 1853 coming from Tennessee. he was educated n Louisville, Kentucky before coming to Collin County to practice Medicine. Doctors were so scarce at that time that he had to work all over Collin County and surrounding counties, going by horseback with his supplies in saddlebags, always ready to stop at pioneer homes along the way. Soon he was joined by two other physicians. Dr. Fitzgerald and Dr. Westfall and the three of them founded Smith Drug in McKinney which is still doing business on the east side of McKinney;s square (1985) and is the oldest continuing business in McKinney.
Dr. Smith served two terms as President of the Medical Examiners for the district. When the Civil War came he joined Col. J. B. Wilmeth's company and served on the Texas coast.
Dr. Smith was twice married, first to Amelia Tinsley and then to Mrs. Wheat of Clarksville. He died November 15, 1886.
