Corinth School
Corinth School #94
CR 92
Celina, Texas
The Corinth School was located near the Corinth Christian Church and the Corinth Cemetery, about 3 miles southeast of Celina on the south side of CR 92. There is a deed for the school district dated July 1910 for 2 acres of land in the J. B. Wilmeth 78-acre survey near the cemetery. Trustees for the school district were J. O. Wolfe, J. H. Painter and J. T. Darnall. The trustees paid $100.00 for the land. The seller of the property was W. H. Love. The land was to be used exclusively for school purposes. If the school closed, the property would revert back to Mr. Love. The school house would be sold at a public sale to the highest bidder. (Vol. 169, p 96-7)
The cemetery is also on the J. B. Wilmeth 78-acre survey with the Corinth Christian Church listed as the owner of the property. The church was east of the cemetery and school. J. B. Wilmeth started several Christian Churches in Collin County.
Teachers at Corinth School included Prof. W. L. Yarbrough, 1912; Miss Lucy Campbell of Plano, 1912, 1913; Miss Jim Storm, 1914; Prof. Harvey Scott, 1914; Mr. Forrester, 1918; Miss Nancy Shephard, 1919. (Weekly Democrat Gazette)
In a statement by Robert Fay Smith (see photo): “I moved with my family to the Dr. Moses Hubbard place when I was six years old. I started school in the fall (1915) at the Corinth school that was located about a mile and half south and a little east of our home. (Currently CR 92, Celina, Texas).
A quote from Robert Fay Smith, who attended the school: “When I was in the fifth grade, the Corinth School and the Cottage Hill School consolidated (approximately 1920). A new school was built halfway between the two old schools. The Corinth building was moved to the L. N. Cox farm (CR 92) and turned into a barn.”
The community of Corinth had a social column in the McKinney newspapers in the 1910s. The last mention of the Corinth School in the McKinney Weekly Democrat Gazette newspaper was in 1919. Miss Nancy Shephard was listed as teacher that year.
In the article “Resumes Collin School Review,” written by the County School Superintendent, W. S. Smith, on April 4, 1918 in the McKinney Weekly Democrat Gazette, Corinth School No. 94 had a Mr. Forrester as teacher and an enrollment of 33. The Superintendent recommended that it join with another school to build them a good school house.
Around 1920 the Corinth and Cottage Hill school districts merged. An auction was held in February 1921 to sell the old school buildings. A. L. Reynolds purchased the Cottage Hill School building and J. O. Wolfe purchased the Corinth School building. (Weekly Democrat Gazette, Feb 10, 1921)
In 1929 the Corinth school house was moved west of R. L. Hay’s house to be used as a barn. (Celina Record Aug 8, 1929). It was on the Bernie Cox farm around 2000.
