Henry Cook School
White Rock Ridge
Plano, Texas
Henry Cook and his family arrived in Texas in 1845. By 1846 they had built a log cabin on White Rock Ridge near White Rock Creek in present northwest Plano. An early school was held in the log cabin.
The Cook home was used for worship services, and in 1850 the Liberty Baptist Church was organized in the home. Liberty Baptist Church was later built about five miles south of the home. When Daniel Cook, Henry’s grandson died in 1847 and there was no cemetery near, Henry donated land for a cemetery. It was known as Cook Cemetery for many years. This is said to be the earliest burial in Plano.
Henry Cook was a veteran of the War of 1812. He died the same day as his son-in-law W. A. Bridges in 1862. The log cabin had been enlarged to two large rooms with a white-rock chimney. The land and cabin were later owned by Rachael Cook Bridges, Cook’s daughter and Bridges’ wife.
