Clifft School
Clifft School
Monkey Run School #155
CR 483
Lavon, Texas
This school was located near SH 205 and CR 483 at Bear Creek. SH 205 is the eastern boundary for the Wylie school district and Clifft was part of the Wylie and Nevada school districts. School district #155 was the last number on the list of the school districts in Collin County.
Monkey Run School was also called Cliff or sometimes Clifft and was located southeast of Wylie near the Rockwall County line on the east side of Bear Creek. It was half way between Millwood and the Jones place, near the Rockwall Highway (SH 205). The school was named for the Cliff Family that lived on a hill nearby about 1890. Mrs. Ward gave the land for the Cliff School House. The first building burned down, and a second one was built about 1902. This served the neighborhood till 1944. It burned down just before it consolidated with the Wylie and Nevada districts.
The community was near a busy road over the East Fork of the Trinity River bottoms. On the high ridge of the Trinity River you could see into Monkey Run, Wylie, and the Rockwall County line. Kids in the area were known to throw mud balls at passing travelers and then run off. People exclaimed, “See the Monkey Run.” When people asked for directions to the community in the river bottom, they often replied, “Down where the monkeys run.” Thus, the name of the community became Monkey Run.
The teachers included Oscar Williams in 1901; Miss Clara Massie in 1903-04; and Mrs. Grace Bryan in 1918. In 1902 the social reporter said that after the course of Bear Creek had changed, students on the west side of the creek would not be able to get to the school. A McKinney newspaper reported there was a Monkey Run baseball team in 1908. In 1912 there were 31 students and 17 in 1925. In 1918 the teacher reported that the school house was not what it should be. Students had some equipment and parents in the community were supporting the Red Cross in planting vegetable gardens and canning vegetables to win the war (World War I).
There was another community in Collin County named Monkey Run. It was located near Westminster.
