Benge Quisenberry
Copy From An Old Newspaper
Benge Quisenberry of the Central State Bank handed us a copy of a newspaper which was printed in McKinney 59 years ago - the 19th day of Aug. 1864. Jas. W. Thomas, deceased, father of our townsman, Jim P. Thomas and Jno. W. Thomas, was editor. The name of the paper was "The McKinney Messenger." it was then in its 10th year. It was a single sheet about 10x16 inches and contained 8 columns of matter. The paper was very coarse and is yellowed with age. It is a keepsake owned by Mrs. Stanley Quisenberry, of this city. She is Benge Quisenberry's mother. Her father, W. B. Benge, was a member of St. John's Lodge No. 51 of this city. The lodge had passed resolutions of respect and these were published in this little paper. They were signed by J. W. Throckmorton, C. R. Breedlove and G. A. Foote. W. H. Andrews was secretary of the lodge. Mr. Benge was also father of Mesdames Maud Powell, Sweet Williams, and Emma Marshal, of this city.
