Barlow School
Barlow School
Rock Hill Road at Coit Road
Rock Hill, Texas
Established in 1858, the Barlow School was built near present-day Preston Road ten miles west of McKinney on Henry Barlow’s land. The lumber for the school was sawed from Fitzhugh Mills, which was ten miles east of McKinney. The building had two rooms connected by a hallway; however, only one of the rooms was used for the school.
Information is not available about when the school closed. Photographs are not available.
The Barlow family had extensive land holdings 2-3 miles east of the community of Rock Hill, which was located on Preston Road. That puts the school near the intersection of present-day Rock Hill Road and Coit Road. The name of Rock Hill Road has changed to PGA Parkway.
The biography of the Barlow family in PROSPER, TEXAS: ITS HISTORY AND FAMILIES does not mention a Barlow School. However, the Pleasant Ridge School was near the southeast corner of the intersection of Rock Hill Road and Coit Road and was probably the one mentioned as being on the Henry Barlow property.
