Backbone School #81
CR 770
Culleoka, Texas
Backbone School and Thompson School are both listed as #81. The Thompson School was located about 2 ¼ miles northeast of the Backbone School. Backbone School was located on the west shore of Pilot Grove Creek.
In 1896 a new school house was finished for the Backbone School. In 1898 J. F. Wilds was a teacher at the school. Prof. W. T. Davis was the teacher in 1899. T. D. Simpson was the teacher in 1901, as well as Miss Estelle Lansdale. Since there were 2 teachers, probably one of them was at Thompson School.
There were 44 students in 1890. H. H. Neeley and J. M. Ledbetter were teachers in 1905 when the attendance at Backbone was 63.
Today the Backbone Cemetery and school sites are included in Corps of Engineers property for Lake Lavon.
